I was thinking today how it’s a little absurd just how much we (Americans) spend on beauty per year. As I was driving from my Lasik consultation appointment (where they shuffle people in and out in herds)…I considered how much money was in that industry. It’s not really a NECESSARY procedure, but people get it who have low prescriptions of negative 2 or negative 3. Then there is me who is practically blind at negative 9 and 10.
The thought of spending $2,400 on laser vision correction (that would be really nice and help me out a lot), combined with my recent Jenny Craig membership and food cost (averaging $100-$150 per week)…makes me wonder if all of this is really worth it.
And it’s not just me, factor into the American beauty money pit, those services that many people get such as teeth whitening, botox treatments, chemical peels, tanning (fake and bake packages) massages (to refresh the body), personal trainers, etc…, even liposuction. Then you add in getting braces and even shopping for high heels and Spanx (women), hair gel and hair transplants (men), and other things to improve what you look like in any little way possible.
Consider this, in a given year I spend probably:
$240 - eyebrow threading/waxing (averaging about $10, sometimes $12 per time, every two weeks give or take)
$500 – manicures and pedicures (average $40 a month for both, with a few other manicures in between)
$420 – gym membership (at $35 per month – which I just canceled recently since I have a mini-gym in my complex)
$360 – contact lenses (I have to get daily wear lenses now, say at $30 per box/month supply)
$150 – makeup (an assortment of new eyeshadows, lipsticks, my regular supply of eyeliner and blush)
$1,670 total a year just on maintenance!
So, what does all this mean – other than we’re obsessed with appearance?
Well to me, it’s worth it because when I’m freshly waxed, manicured and dressed well, I feel better. I feel more confident, prettier and have a better sense of self worth. And, isn’t that worth it?
Then again it’s horrible to think about how much money I spend on things like that, when there are people in the world (and this country) who can’t afford to eat. And it starts young, maintaining this. Think about it, we put all our kids in braces, send them to fat camps, and provide them with allergists, therapists, dermatologists, nutritionists and dozens of other specialty doctors…while other children can’t even eat or see a doctor when they’re sick (nevermind when they’re well). It’s a bit disconcerting.
I’m not saying I’m going to suddenly go from a life of luxury to a life of simplicity…but I am a little more aware of just how much it all costs to keep it all together.

Babes..that’s not the half of it. Wait until you get into the dermabrasion and glycolic peels and waxing…everything and Restylane injections and luxe shoes and …and…and….I remember one day a co-worker, back from a lunch time hair appointment, sighing at me and saying, “Maintenance is SO expensive.”

So are you going through with the LASIK? As another blind person (-8.5) I am fascinated to hear how people with our type of vision take to this..
After daily use of contacts for 4 years and glasses for 20 I am intrigued by the thought of waking up and just being able to see….

$150 on makeup?? Even the prettiest natural beauty spends double that, I imagine — I end up giving Sephora and Blue Mercury about 110% of my salary.
Where do you get your pedis done, by the way? The best one I’ve found is $45, a price that makes a monthly trip kinda prohibitive. I’ve been to cheaper and more expensive, but nothing compares (so far) to my girl Jennifer at PIAF. If you know of someplace significantly less pricey, however, well…I might be convinced to jump ship.
thanks,
Johanna

where in this area can you get a gym membership for only $35/month?! i go to the nice-but-run-down YWCA at gallery place and it is $60/month!

I never thought how much I spend on beauty products till I was out of a job and had to cut back. OMG never again!
Beauty is a state of mind and no beauty product is going to make you beautiful on the outside if you are ugly
on the inside. Meaning if you don’t like yourself, nothing will make you look pretty, cause your ugly
will still show.
You have a very thoughtful and understanding mind of someone who loves beauty items…
Love your blog!

Kim’s comment rocks. I could not have said it better myself. But, also, its post like these that remind how much easier it is to be a guy. I shave once a week, get a haircut once a month and besides the gym and a ridiculous amount of money spent on food I can get by on little more than hard work in the gym and eating right. Seriously, its very possible to find a girl who finds a scruffy guy with messy hair attractive but I am not so sure the same is true in reverse.

Yeah, I think I spend much more on makeup, but I don’t do mani/pedis so I guess it works out.

Johanna & Not Carrie – yeah, I think I spend a lot more on makeup than that…but I was trying to estimate conservatively, since I was already aghast at how big the number was already…I mean, a couple purchases at Sephora will easily push you to that limit.

Johanna and other pedi gals – There is a place across from Union Station (I know you’re downtown, not on Capitol Hill, but…) I get a monthly French pedicure that is terrific for $33. I think it’s called something easy like Capitol Nails.
And I pay $39 a month to go to all the Bally’s in the region – it’s less if you just want to choose the one closest.

Great post! Very thought-provoking!!!
My beauty costs per year are very similar to yours (except for mani-pedis; we’ve recently had a fungus scare here in the Valley, so shelling out for the posh salons are a necessity).
To answer the question posed in your post, Yes. Sadly, it is worth it. We all want to believe inner beauty is what counts, but let’s face it: the first thing you notice when you walk into a bar is not a man’s intellect, but how hot he looks.
Plus, if it gives you a boost, that’s even better. I notice I feel much more confident when my nails are done even if it is an insignificant detail.

BTW Thanks Todd you are too kind! Beauty is in some ways totally over-priced and yes Valley Girl is right as well. We all notice that hot guy when he walks in, either because he is hot looking or because you can feel that “I am so hot and you want me kind of attitude” that hits you first.
And no guy asks about your mind before he has already checked you out
Beauty no matter how you look at it will be a state of mind.
I have seen down dead beautiful women I wouldn’t want
to be around cause they are all empty inside and I have
seen women that kind of mousy like and men can’t stay
away from.
It will always be about who you are on the inside.
BUT a little makeup and a great pair of looking nails
never hurt either right ladies?
